The family moved from a farm near Moundridge, Kansas, to the farm north of Canton in 1936. Having purchased the Simpson property, the family operated a dairy business. Antique collectors may still find glass bottles or perhaps the Christmas colored bottle caps. Milk sold for $.10 per quart in those days; home deliveries were twice daily.
Those who graduated from Canton high were:
–Dan, class of 1939
–Willard, class of 1940
–Herbert, class of 1941
–Martha, class of 1943
Arthur, class of 1945
John, class of 1947
A tornado in 1938 damaged the house and barn, ripped the garage away, leaving the two cars parked on a slab. It also destroyed a cow shelter and moved a stock tank through the sky, easing it down in the middle of a field where it was found while harvesting. The force also lifted the center sill in the barn, then settled it down on a cat’s tail. No injuries were sustained, only an indignity for the cat.
The family now numbers more than one hundred including children and grandchildren. Of the immediate family coming to Canton, the only death was Alvin who died in 1939.
