This story is from Grace Goering, the wife of cousin John Goering.
When we (Grace and John Goering) were farming in western Kansas, Herb helped us. This day the men had filled the truck with wheat, but they decided to have supper and then take the truck to the nearest elevator so they would be in line the next day before too many others would get ahead of them. While the men ate supper, the laying hens we had brought along went to roost on the truck axle. The men had supper, then jumped in the truck without changing anything. Herb took off and John followed the truck. Not being on the road too long, one-by-one the hens were dropping off. John picked them up and brought them back to the school house where we made our home for that harvest. John continued on to the elevator to bring back the truck drivers. The hens kept on laying.
