Poppy plants

One of the recipes that traveled to the United States with John B.’s family was poppy seed rolls. A poppy seed roll is a pastry consisting of a sweet yeast bread with a dense, rich, bittersweet filling of poppy seed.

Nowadays, it is possible to buy cans of poppy seed filling, or poppy seeds in bulk to make one’s own filling, but John B.’s mom would have had to grow her own poppy plants.
