April 3
A hearty hello!
In “The Hopefield cemetery“, the next to last paragraph, the earliest known Goering ancestor is given as Moses Goering. The spelling should be “Gerig” [editor: correction made, thank you!] as it appears in the 1791 passport in Montbeliard, France for travel to Poland, a facsimile of which appears in the GOERING GENEOLOGY published in 1940 and available in the Bethel College Historical Library. An earlier record of his name as Mossi Gerig appears in a photo of the church book in Monbeliard in which is recorded his baptism in 1766. You may not be able to read it, but it is in the middle of the fourth line of the first picture I am attaching. The name of his bride, Marry Hablutzell, appears in the middle of the second line of an entry made in 1769. (The third picture in my attachment.) gerigpictures Aunt Ida and I acquired these photos following a visit to the church there, after we viewed these entries in person.
(Update on April 4: By the way, the middle pic that is faded records Mossi and Marry’s
wedding. When we were in Montbeliard in 2004, our Mennonite guide even
took us to the building in the country side where we were told they were
married.)
As to the location of the pictures of the uncles and aunts [who are these folks?], my guess would be they were taken in the house at Peabody. Leonard’s memory is better than mine, and he might know.
